May 9: Victory Day
Today, a ceremonial parade in Moscow marked 79 years since the famous Russian Red Army led by Marshal Zhukov crushed Hitler’s Germany and defeated the greatest evil in the history of mankind. Over 20 million Russians and Soviets gave their lives in the Great Patriotic War, the fight against Nazi Germany and its satellites.
May 9 is celebrated in Serbia and Srpska. The “Immortal Road” march was organized in Banja Luka. Participants of the march laid wreaths at the Monument to the Victims of Fascism on the Square of Fallen Fighters
The Serbs made a huge sacrifice in the fight against Nazism, fascism and ustasha regime. Serbs west of the Drina River were subjected to genocide in the Nazi creation of the Independent State of Croatia, and Serbia and Montenegro were divided into German, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Italian occupation zones where policies of terror and destruction of the Serbian people and their culture were implemented.
The Serbs in the territory of the NDH, faced with extermination, spontaneously organized themselves and since May 1941 (the Đurđevdan Uprising in the villages of Kiev and Tramošnja near Sanski Most) have been starting a struggle for bare survival. More than 1.5 million Serbs perished in concentration camps, at the front, in escapes, in the war of factions of the resistance movement, etc.
On this day, let’s remember those who gave their lives to create a better and more tolerant world. Paying tribute to those who died in the anti-fascist struggle, we are committed to preserving freedom and a just world.
Glory to the heroes!
